Fashion’s most anticipated evening wrapped this first Monday of May, leaving us all wondering—is it time for us to invest in our first three-piece suits? How best should we be styling a that chic floppy hat? And of course, where can we buy a dress made out of rulers?
Celebrating the opening of the Met’s latest fashion exhibition, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, the Gala saw celebrities and fashion houses showing up and showing out in their best custom-tailored pieces—inspired by the Black Dandyism of the 1920’s Harlem Renaissance (AP U.S. History girlies, now’s your time to shine!). How could we pick our top outfits of the evening? It wasn’t easy, but these celebs aced the assignment…
Zendaya
Speaking of perfectly tailored, this custom Louis Vuitton monochromatic suit fits Zendaya like a dream. And who could ignore that chic floppy hat? Reminds us of an undercover spy we used to know (*wink* *wink*).
Emma Chamberlain
Emma gives paper doll in this bold 2D look. This cutout, deconstructed striped suit is topped off with mesh gloves and an edgy, androgynous pixie cut and sleek sunnies. Can we talk about her pro smizing skills?
Jenna Ortega
Metallic meets math in this silver gown made entirely out of rulers. Jenna’s creative approach to the “Tailored To You” theme embraces the Met Gala’s history of avant-garde custom couture and begs the question: Can anything be a dress if you put your mind to it?
Priyanka
Where do we begin? Priyanka Chopra’s dress is just the first of many polka dot moments we’ll see this summer. This classic print paired with textured gloves and a statement hat combine into a timeless ensemble. And that statement necklace? Well, it’s the (green) cherry on top.
Flau’jae
All eyes on Flau’jae. Looking bold in black and white, this paneled gown features an oversized bow and ruffled top with a sleek silhouette. Simply stunning!
Jennie
Perhaps one of our favorite looks of the evening, Jennie stepped out in this stunning satin Channel tuxedo gown and two-toned boat hat. A flower embellishment, chic buttons and pearl accents complete the look.
Sofia Richie Grainge
Hue, style and fabric are just a few reasons to love this look. The detailing on this gown steals the show, with the mock turtleneck and cap sleeves coming together in a bold open-backed bodice. And of course, would it be a Sophia Richie Grainge look without her signature slicked back bun? Sophisticated glam never goes out of style.
Joey King
Mixing patterns and textures (oh, and millions of mini mirrors) is no sweat for Joey King. The trick to this checkerboard/polka dot combo is all about adding color. A green color-blocked suit keeps it all grounded.
Monica Barbaro
Where in the world is Monica Barbaro? This classic Dior silhouette screams Casablanca meets Carmen Sandiego…but of course, that’s because it was all the rage in the 1940’s, when the House of Dior added this drop waist, tea length design to its New Look collection.
Lupita Nyong’o
Stunning declaration: Lupita Nyong’o is now the only person allowed to wear this shade of baby blue! But only if she always pairs it with a flowy, sheer cape.
Tyla
Tyla’s face card never declines. Striped seams are the main attraction of this two-piece dress. Vertical lining helps lengthen the look for this petite queen. Oh, and did we mention the 30 carats worth of diamonds featured in this outfit?
Demi Moore
Demi Moore knows how to attend the Met Gala, appearing this year in a gown quite literally tailored like a tie. This custom Thom Browne sheath dress is topped with a structured halo-like neckline (get it?).
Pharrell Williams and Helen Lasichanh
Modeling Louis Vuitton, gala co-chair Pharrell’s suit is actually covered in 100,000 pearls (look closely at that blazer!). It’s complemented by wife Helen’s minimal black leather gown and oversized blazer. A perfect contrast!
