Something has changed within us…after seeing the new Wicked trailer!
The first Wicked movie left all of us stunned, touched and beyond eager for more. Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Galinda (now Glinda) are an unstoppable duo (and may we mention best friend goals) that we all need.
But ever since the first Wicked movie dropped in November, we can’t help but wonder when we’d get more deets about the sequel, Wicked: For Good.
Of course, Jon M. Chu left none of us disappointed when Universal Studios released the first trailer yesterday: The outfits, vocals and the subtle Easter eggs are all wrapped in a perfect green-and-pink bundle.
In the first few seconds , we can already see the different dynamics between Elphaba and Glinda. They’re not the same innocent students at Shiz University. Instead of Glinda’s usual bubbly pink, she wears different colors like purple and white. Elphaba dons her iconic black hat and her broomstick remains by her side. They’re still friends…but friends in a world where they’re pitted against each other.
The short clip is packed with plenty of gasp-worthy events, like Glinda walking down the aisle to Fiyero (which didn’t happen in the musical, btw.) Plus, Dorothy (and the infamous heels; don’t those look *super* familiar…) make an appearance. Who plays her? And what role she plays in the film? We are still wondering!
Of course, no good trailer would be complete without its Easter eggs. The brief cameo that Madame Morrible (played by Michelle Yeoh) makes is marked by her creating a twister. Could it be the infamous twister that brought Dorothy to Oz, and killed the Wicked Witch of the East?
Finally, Ariana and Cynthia absolutely deliver with their angelic voices. Snippets of their duet to “For Good” are heard throughout the video. All we can say is that after “Defying Gravity” (and an uncountable amount of times trying to imitate Cynthia’s iconic rift), it seems as if part two of Wicked will fly pass our expectations and fill in those large ruby slippers!
While the days til November 21st (when Wicked: For Good will make its debut in cinemas) seem long, there are plenty of ways to spend the time. May we suggest hosting a rewatch of the Wicked movie? All we can say for sure is that these two witches have made their marks, both in and out of Oz—and we can’t wait to see them in cinemas soon.
