It’s giving straight-up science experiment—but make it aesthetic.
It’s a rainy afternoon (boo), and you could start your summer reading list, tackle the mountain of clothes that’s taken over your chair and finally write that thank-you note to Aunt Greta (better late than never). Or you could master the holographic glass mani that’s taken over your feed since spring—all done with the swipe of a magnet. We know which one you’re picking.
Prep with Polish
“These hypnotic looks require a special polish formula packed with tiny magnetic particles,” explains Olivia Van Iderstine, Olive & June mani trend expert and head of education. Start with one thin coat of color and let it dry for a few minutes. Then follow with a slightly thicker layer (try the Olive & June Magnetic Polish Duo, $20, oliveandjune.com). Want that extra pop of contrast? Use black polish as your base layer, suggests nail artist Lauren Ortega.
Manipulate your mani
While the second coat is still wet, it’s time to activate the magic. Hover a magnet above or below each nail and watch the polish do its thing as you shift, instructs Van Iderstine. The effect totally depends on the magnet’s shape and how you move it—so play around until your nails are radiating full-on ethereal cosmic energy.
Seal the deal
Once you’re vibing with the results, let your mani chill for about 10 minutes before locking it in with a top coat. Craving a little extra sparkle? Add a layer of shimmery polish for that final touch of oomph.
Take a short cut
No time to DIY? Press-ons to the rescue. “They’re ultra-glossy and perfect when you want that extra burst of glam,” says nail artist Miss Pop. She recommends the Salon Perfect Magnetic Mirror Effect Collection ($7, salonperfect.com).
Theory of Magnetism
Fab, futuristic finish incoming…
Classic Cat-eye
New to nail art? This one’s a breeze. As you apply the magnetic polish, rest your finger on a rectangular magnet and—boom—instant sleek cat-eye effect, says Ortega.
French Twist
“The updated French manicure is one of my favorite trends right now,” shares Miss Pop. Give the classic look a glow-up by gliding a rectangular magnet around the tip of each nail for a chic, high-fashion finish. Bonus points if you add pearls or rhinestones for some extra bling.
Heart It
“The hearts look like they’re beating glitter—I’m obsessed!” says Miss Pop. This technique takes a little finesse, but it’s so worth it. Straighten a paper clip, then bend the ends into a tiny “V.” Hold it near a magnet and hover over the center of your nail to shift the particles into a heart.
