The feeling of having zero assignments on your to-do list feels amazing—on top of cool glasses of lemonade, the most tinted shades and lounging with your besties. They are all part of what most say is their favorite season…summer! Yes, you might feel over the moon with your two months of freedom, but have you ever wanted to experience something that is not only fun but rewarding? Here are our top tips for an unforgettable, academic-weapon-coded summer experience.
Take up a passion project
What better time than summer to have a try at that book you’ve always wanted to write or launch a nonprofit? Summer is one of the best times to experiment with a passion project because of your more relaxed schedule. It’s important to have your project be something you’re really passionate about (hence the ‘passion’ part), so it feels less like work and more like fun!
We recommend keeping a planner or journal and giving yourself mini deadlines to accomplish small goals. It is rewarding and fun to see all the progress you have made by the end of August.
Learn a new language
Traveling somewhere this summer? If so, this might be the perfect thing for you. Set the days of your trip as a “deadline” to learn some basic vocab like “hello,” “goodbye” and “how are you.” It can be as easy as learning a lesson a day with Duolingo. You’ll sound like a pro by the time you’re on your trip.
Even if you’re not traveling, it is still beneficial to take up learning a new language, especially if you want to get a jump-start on it for the next school year.
Stack up your TBR based on your favorite movies and shows
The Summer I Turned Pretty, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, and We Were Liars are all *super* trendy shows right now, but did you know that they were books first? Although the shows might be fun to watch, it’s always interesting to look back at the original materials to see where they came from. You can curate your TBR based on the shows you’ve been watching lately, and maybe even look for differences between the two. Bonus points if you throw some classics on both your TBR and watch list. May we suggest Little Women and The Great Gatsby?
Volunteer in your community
What’s a better way to give back than to volunteer ? Not only does it make a positive impact on your town, but it is also an opportunity for you to get hands-on experience in something that you’re interested in. Whether that be volunteering at your local hospital or library or helping with a food drive, spend your summer learning something new while enriching others.
